Saint
Seiya is a series that started airing
in Japan in the late 1980's. It is as old,
and arguably as popular, as Dragonball.
Saint
Seiya has a worldwide following,
though there has been no American
version of the show that has been
produced until this past September.
It
was then that Cartoon
Network began
airing a show called
KNIGHTS
OF THE ZODIAC.
This
version, though 99% of the
character names are intact from the
original series (VERY unusual for a
translated Anime) lacks the conviction
of the original. The U.S. producers are
trying to "dumb it down" to a very
simplistic level. Most Anime have very
subtle undertones, which is what sets
them apart from "traditional" animated
fare.
The characterizations are VERY off
(IMHO), which also detracts from it. The
character of Hyoga (called Cygnus in
the Original version) is supposed to be
"cold", reflected by his Ice Powers, and
the fact that he was trained in Siberia.
He is very serious & laid back, yet he
can "warm up" if needed, In this new
version, he's little more than a surfer
boy, complete with valley accent, yet
(thankfully) no local verbage (radical!)
